How to Use and Make Lawn Sand for Killing Moss and Weeds

What is Lawn Sand?

Lawn sand is a combined weedkiller, moss killer for lawns and lawn fertiliser - though usually sold as a moss treatment. It consists of ammonium sulphate, iron sulphate and fine sand. It should be applied between April and September, in dry conditions, but preferably when rain is expected within a couple of days.

Moss Killer Lawn Sand

Follow the application instructions on the packet, but do not exceed the stated application rate otherwise the grass may be killed - as well as weeds and moss. Annual use will also keep worms, and therefore worm casts off the lawn.

Lawn sand can be bought at most large garden centres together with the smaller nursery type centres. It is not the most popular of lines to stock, so difficulty may be experienced in finding a lawn sand supplier in your area.It maybe in the section of Moss Killer for Lawns.

Because of the high weight to value ratio, it is not normally available online. Where lawn sand is available online, then expect to pay a premium price for either the product, or the carriage costs.

Lawn Sand used as Moss Killer for Lawns

Moss Killer Lawn Sand

Lawn sand is a relatively old fashioned, traditional way of feeding lawns - and killing moss in Lawns. It does not get to the heart of the problem with moss - simply kills what is visible in the lawn. If you have a persistent moss problem, then you will have to deal with the problem - not simply treat the results. Simply killing mossin lawns, is like trying to cure a cold with a handkerchief!

The active ingredient for killing moss with lawn sand, is iron sulphate. The other main ingredient - Ammonium sulphate - is a general fertilizer with a high Nitrogen release, which will help to green up the grass. The sand in lawn sand - usually fine, is not a magic ingredient. It is simply to enable the chemicals to be spread and distributed properly. Without the sand as a 'carrier' it would be difficult to spread the chemicals thinly. As well as being a moss killer for lawns - it also acts as a lawn feed!

When asking for Lawn Sand, make sure that the assistant is aware of what you actually want. It is NOT, simply sand for the lawn! I have often seen sand for the lawn labelled as lawn sand. NOT THE SAME THING! The other thing to be aware of, is conversely, you DO NOT USE Lawn Sand for top dressing the lawn. For this you need to use washed sand (No Chemical content.)

Making Lawn Sand - The ingredients. An old Recipe!

If you have problems obtaining lawn sand (which you do not anymore, thanks to Amazon), or you may have the raw ingredients left over from other jobs, then you can easily make it for yourself. You simply need a supply of dry fine sand - Silver sand is ideal - or from the Builder's Merchant, you can get a bag of Block Paving Sand - Kiln Dried. Iron Sulphate and Ammonium Sulphate (Sulphate of Ammonia) is available in small packs - or larger quantities at most good garden centres. When you buy the chemicals, make sure that you obtain powdered forms and not granules. (The granules will simply fall off the leaves of the grasses or weeds, whilst powder will adhere to the damp grass and moss.

The formulafor making this mosskiller for lawns is simple to mix and prepare. By volume - simply mix the three ingredients together in equal proportion. I.e. - a container full of each. Wear Gloves, or the Iron Sulphate will stain your hands - also your clothes. Do the mix outside - but not on a windy day, and avoid breathing in the dust! (Common sense really.) Only mix as much as you are going to use, for it does not keep very well. With such a simple formula of ingredients, it should be easy to mix the right quantity - even if it takes a few mixes.

CAUTION - Although necessary on lawns that are prone to weed and moss infestation due to stress such as shade, drought, waterlogging etc lawn sand should not be thrown at the lawn all the time. A good lawn care programme will help maintain a healthy vigorous lawn that is less susceptible to lawn weeds and moss.

Elixir Gardens Fine Lawn Sand
  • When applied to the lawn, the lawn sand falls past and in between grass, onto the soil or thatch layer. This means that the grass is not scorched by the effects of the lawn sand. Lawn sand contains nitrogen and iron, to give your lawn a boost all year round, leaving it a healthy green colour.
  • The ammonium sulphate content is a fertiliser that releases a high level of nitrogen. This release of nitrogen will help make your lawn grass greener. Combined with the iron sulphate and the fine sand that helps with the even distribution of the chemicals, the spreading of lawn sand can help your lawn and garden grass appear less patchy, and gain a much more even grass coverage
  • Lawn sand works best when applied to your grass every 4-6 weeks over the late spring and throughout the summer. This regular use allows for surface moss and weeds to be slowly eradicated, and for the production of a healthy lawn. Gardeners should be careful though not to overuse the product
  • The sulphur constituent also slightly acidifies the local grass environment making it less conducive to turf pathogens.
  • CAUTION - Although necessary on lawns that are prone to stress such as shade, drought, water logging etc lawn sand should not be thrown at the lawn all the time. A good lawn care programme will help maintain a healthy vigorous lawn.

Better than Evergreen Complete? - by , January 07, 2020

I have had excellent results using the Elixir Gardens Lawn Sand and even now in early January the grass is still in great condition and has maintained the lush green colour. I've uploaded 4 pictures - one is in Summer, one in Autumn and two in Winter (Jan 7th) so you can see how good the lawns look. I live in the North East of England so we generally have much lower temperatures than in the South so anyone living down there has no excuse for having a bad lawn when lawn sand is available..... As far as application goes I used a small plastic trowel to throw the sand on as a fine dust during a calm day and it was quite easy to get the coverage without any noticeable patches which had been missed. It took a while to apply by hand but the treatment has lasted a good 3 months from early October until today (7th January). Before that it was early spring last year when it was applied so it's really only needed once every 6 months or so making it a very cheap treatment to use. Moss was killed effectively although I did use extra sand in areas containing moss and buttercup to ensure that it was eliminated with a single treatment - maybe I was lucky but I didn't get any areas of scorch or blackness except where the weeds were and those areas were raked and re-seeded to good effect. However, I did get a couple of areas on my patio where I'd spilled a small amount of lawn sand and that stained a very noticeable rusty iron colour - nothing major but I will be more careful next time. I'd definitely recommend this lawn sand to anyone wanting an effective treatment to keep their lawns looking in great condition with minimal effort.

Absolutely superb, genuinely improved our failing moss ridden lawn... We 'forked' holes all over the garden then I slathered this all over in hope it would help with the drainage and quality of the soil. In what seemed like less than a week we had green, green grass (which we haven't had on that lawn in more than 3 years), no weeds or moss... Phenomenal if not a little pricey

Customer questions & answers

Question: Can I lay with new seed and what setting should I put my evergreen lawn spreader on please thanks

Answer: lawn sand is for applying on existing lawns, for removing moss. It also knocks back some weeds. There are two types of lawn sand one for use in early summer the other in the autumn.you need to apply it to give a reasonable covering. By Mr D A Rootham on 07 June 2019

Question: Hi, how is the shipping weight only 23kgs when the product alone weighs 25kgs?

Answer: Typo error I suspect, bag is heavy, delivery lady struggled. Give it a try i will be buying more this spring. By Trevor on 20 February 2019

Question: I want to use this lawn sand to help with moss removal. When is the best time of year to apply it and is there a time that should be avoided?

Answer: I used the sand in Spring and it removed all the moss leaving bare patches. However seeding and fertilizing resulted in complete recovery. Now I use Autumn and Winter treatment at the end of the year and Spring and Summer at the start of the year. Autumn and Winter thickens the grass and minimises moss growth. By Frank N on 20 February 2020

Question: Can this product be used on artificial turf i have moss comming through the weed membrane?

Answer: Hi, I believe the Iron may stain your artificial Grass. I suggest you use our Gallup Home and garden weedkiller which should not leave any residue. This can be found by pasting the following item number into Amazons search. B071GV9Y2P By Elixir Garden Supplies SELLER on 17 May 2018

Using Lawn Sand

Lawn sand will kill the existing moss and many different types of weeds, and at the same time help to green up your grass. The Sulphate of Ammonia is a high Nitrogen fertiliser, which is essential for good strong grass.

Lawn Sand is often recommended by organic organisations and websites - instead of using lawn weed and feed! lawn sand is NOT ORGANIC! The two chemicals used are often found in normal weed, feed and moss-killer. Just because it is old fashioned, and probably what your grand father used, does not make it organic. Much the same as many other old-fashioned recipes. (Another subject!)

You can either spread - broadcast - the mix over the lawn when the grass is damp. Early morning is good. If you do this, make sure that you walk backwards so as not to tread on the treated area! If it does not rain within a couple of days, then water it in - using a sprinkler. Do not walk over the treated area. After a few days - or a week - you will see the moss areas turning black. This will also be the case with any weeds - in particular the broader leaved varieties. Some of the grasses may also turn black - especially if you have over-applied - but this is normally temporary, and rights itself within a week or so.

The other alternative is to use a mechanical spreader.

Mixed in the proportions as above, then it should be evenly spread at a rate of around 4ounces per square yard. Mark out your lawn in 1 or 2 yard squares using string lines. For estimating larger areas, this works out at around 3kgs per 22 sq. metres or - as it is old fashioned, but still good - 6.5lbs per 26 sq. yards.

You may have to re-apply after 4-6 weeks to fully kill off the moss. Do NOT over apply, just to be on the safe side. If you do, you may kill off some of your grass!
