Care Of The Acer Palmatum Black Lace

Acer Palmatum Black Lace is a small stand up Japanese Maple tree, an adult tree can reach 3 to 4 meters in height with a spread of 4 to 5 meters, it is not a very densely branched Maple Tree neither is it very leafy. The Black Lace will reach it full protential in 10 to 15 years. Ours in the picture and video is 2 meters tall with a width of 2 meters and it is only 7 to 10 years old. It still has a lot of growing to do.

The Japanese Maple, Acer Palmatum Black Lace is native of Japan and is part of the Sapindaceae family. more info The outstanding features of the Acer Palmatum Black Lace is the wonderful colouration of its bark and branches and the deep colouration of its spring leaves. The Black Lace's bark and branches are a wonderful dark red / purple colour which is lightly decorated with fawn coloured flecks and join lines. It has long thin branches which reach to the sky and eventually spreading out to make a mushroomed shaped head.

The Black Lace has medium sized leaves, approximately 5 cm by 5 cm, which are a deep cut of 7 lobes with jaggied edges.

In the spring the leaves start a deep purple colour and remain throughout the summer, if it is in a shaded area it can develop green undertones and even some leaves will turn green. The leaves slowly change into a stunning spectrum of orange and deep reds in late September / October and finally transform into a bright orange.

Planting in full sun or partial sun is preferable and if you do not want it to shoot up keep it in its pot and then you can use it as a patio tree.

The Acer Palmatum Black Lace is a great addition to any Japanese garden, patio or courtyard.
