Acer Palmatum Dissectum Lionheart

Acer Palmatum Dissectum Lionheart was introduced by Duncan and Davies Nursery from New Zealand and is classed a relatively new Japanese Maple.

The Acer Palmatum Dissectum Lionheart has a stand-up habit when young and spreads nicely as it gets older to make a perfect mushroom shaped dome.

The Dissectum Lionheart is a medium sized Maple, it can reach to 4 meters tall with an equal spread or larger, it will take 20 years to reach its full maturity and 10 years to reach its potential.

The Acer Palmatum Dissectum Lionheart has a stand up character, very branchy, with vertical trunk and virtual horizontal branches which lead to a labyrinth of thinner branches and shoots which support hundreds of leaves making this a very dense tree. The bark and branches are a light brown, fawn colour with green overtones, its shoots are thin and made of soft wood, they are a glossy deep purple colour which really add to the foliage.

The soft wood shoots hang down and sway in the wind to give the Lionheart its weeping effect.

The leaves are largely dissected with 9 deeply cut lobes with slightly jagged edges which are about 12 cm long and 12 cm wide. In the spring the leaves emerge a deep red colour with purple shoots and gradually turn to deep purple and red colour with red shoots in the autumn.

The Dissectum Lionheart is similar to most Acers in that it is slow growing especially when potted, but it enjoys full sun so you can plant it out to help it flourish better. It is a wonderful addition to any Japanese garden, it is equally happy to be left in its pot and can be ideal for any patio or courtyard.
