The Acer Palmatum Dissectum Sunset is a truly remarkable specimen and it is going to be a proud center piece on our stand at Chelsea Flower Show 2019, it enjoys full sun but preferably in part shade, facing east or west, giving it morning or afternoon sun. It is very happy in a pot or container which can be displayed on your patio in the summer and easily moved to a more sheltered area in the winter.
Acer Palmatum Dissectum Sunset is a weeping / cascading Japanese maple by nature. It will grow to 3 to 4 feet tall and the branches will turn and cascade down to give it a lovely weeping effect. The foliage is dense which gives it a lovely dome shaped head. Be mindful when planting it out as it will have a spread of one of to feet wider than its height. Its weeping branches will also come down longer than its height. It is a wonderful pond side acer where its branches and foliage droop into the water.
We positioned it center stage at Chelsea Flower Show 2019 and it helped us to achieve our 5th Gold Medal.
The Sunset is a dissectum with dense foliage, its deeply cut feathery leaves of 7 to 9 lobes which span 10cm. A single leaf does not look special, but when they are massed together, look fantastic. The leaves are a lovely yellow green colour in the spring with a lighter lime green vein connected by a very fine red stem. As the summer comes on the leaf will get a tinge of red around the edges. In the autumn the red tinge grows inwards to make a stunning fire ball of red and orange, giving it the name Sunset.
The weeping branches are lime green which are soft and springy by nature and surprisingly strong, they sway beautifully in a gentle breeze and remain intact in a storm. Hidden away is light brown trunk which is lightly speckled with vertical green strips.
In the autumn the leaves finally transform into a bright fire-glow red / orange / yellow colour, absolutely stunning, just like a Sunset.
The Sunset, like the majority of Japanese Acers enjoys full sun and partial shade equally. You can leave it in its pot or container for many years (it will grow slower) which is ideal for your patio or courtyard and it can be a center piece to any Japanese garden design.
Acer Palmatum Dissectum Sunset is one of my favourite Japanese Maples and is truly a remarkable addition to any garden, a tree you can be proud of.
