Acer Palmatum Koto No Ito is explosive, just like a firework on New Years Eve and it is one of the most popular Japanese Maples.
Acer Palmatum Koto No Ito is a dwarf like Japanese Maple, and the name Koto No Ito loosely translates to 'Golden Old Harp' or 'Harp Strings' and it can be commonly called or known as 'The Dancing Monkey Tree' for the way the leaves sway and jump around in the wind. In the autumn I would say it is like the midnight sky full of exploding fireworks on New Years Eve, if you look at the autumn picture you will see what I mean.
The Japanese Maple Koto No Ito is in the Linearilobum class, this class has very narrow long lobes, like strings or straps. The leaves are exceptionally long and thin, up to 10 cm long and 2 to 3 mm wide, new foliage can be 4 to 5 mm thick in contrast.
The Koto No Ito is a medium sized Maple, it can reach to 3 meters tall with an equal spread or larger, it will take 25 years to reach full maturity and 10 years to reach its potential.
The Acer Palmatum Koto No Ito has a stand up shrubby character, very branchy, growing vertical and horizontally which are a lovely lime green in colour. They lead to a labyrinth of thinner branches and shoots which support hundreds of leaves making this a very dense tree. Young shoots can be a bright red colour adding to the stunning foliage.
The leaves are long and thin and hang down off the shoots which give it the weeping effect of the 'Dancing Monkey'. In the spring the leaves start mainly yellow turning to a lovely lime green in the summer. The Autumn they are an explosion of red and yellow colour, cascading down just like a firework, truly amazing.
The Koto No Ito is similar to most Acers in that it is slow growing especially when potted, but it enjoys full sun so you can plant it out to help it flurish better. It is a wonderful addition to any Japanese garden, it is equally happy to be left in its pot and can be ideal for any patio or courtyard.
My only issue or problem with the Koto No Ito is that I do not have any real mature trees to video or picture, we keep selling them, lol. It is a big seller and if you do not have one, why not?
