Acer Palmatum Shishigashira has achieved the RHS prestigeous AGM Award of Garden Merit and it is a striking addition to any Japanese Garden, Patio or courtyard.
The Acer Palmatum Shishigashira is of Japanese Origin dating back to the 1800's and still grows wild in the forests of Japan where it can reach 18 feet tall.
The Shishigashira is a slow growing up-right maple ideal for a courtyard or patio tree, if kept in a pot or container it will reach 6 ft in 15 years. Its notable characteristic are its small palmate leaves which have very short stems, they look like they have been glued onto the branches in dense tight clusters.
The leaves are small and dainty, they span upto an inch. In the spring the leaves start mainly green with a faint pinky red tips and edges. They slowly change into a stunning fire truck red in the autumn, some leaves will have an orange tint which blends beautifully.
The Trunk is detailed with stunning lime green coloured bark which is decorated with white / grey freckles. I love the colouration of the branches, they are the same lime green colour from the trunk which gradually fades to a wonderful bright rusty golden brown colour.
The Shishigashira enjoys partly shaded areas and does not like cold and draughty areas. It is a great potted or container tree which is a fine addition to any Japanese garden, patio or courtyard.
