Acer Palmatum Dissectum Baldsmith is a dwarf shrub type with a weeping habit of Japanese Maple and it is a fantastic choice for the small Japanese garden, courtyard or patio. This specimen variety is one of my favourites for the wonderful blend of diverse coloured leaves and it likes full sun.
The Japanese Maple Baldsmith is a "Lace Leaf Dissectum", a very dense shrub-like crown with a weeping habit which will reach a height of about 2.5 meters with a 2-meter spread. Ours is very young and it is about 5-7 years old, it still has a lot of growing to go, it will look at its best at about 10 years onwards and will not reach its maturity until it is 20 years old. The Baldsmith has a longer trunk than other dissectums which gives it a more stand up look with the same mushroomed shape canopy.
The Acer Palmatum Dissectum Baldsmith has deeply cut, lace-like, dissected leaves, each delicate leaf consists of 7 lobes which are very thin and jagged to a crisp point.
It has a single smooth trunk with lime green coloured bark, lightly decorated with fawn coloured rings. The Baldsmith will dome out and weep downwards with 3 or 4 main hardwood branches which support the magnitude of softwood branches which gives the Baldsmith a very dense shrub-like appearance. The thin softwood branches weep down and are a lovely deep red colour which sways gently in the wind, these change to a purple-red colour in the autumn.
The lacy leaves are a magnitude of diverse colour, a lovely spectrum of reds, greens, yellows and purples, in the spring the new foliage are an orange / red colour. This is why I like it so much, so much colour. In late September / October the leaves will transform into a bright red and just before the fall they fade to an orange and yellow colour.
The deep cut leaves are 5 to 7 cm wide and 7 to 10 cm long, they are very thin with jagged teeth upon the lobes, they are nothing on their own, but this has a very dense shrubby habit which makes this a wonderful Japanese Maple tree.
The Baldsmith is similar to most Acers in that it is slow growing especially when potted, in its infant years it will grow higher than wider and can be a patio or courtyard tree but as it reaches its potential it will start to spread out and would prefer to be planted out in the ground. The Baldsmith is a very hardly Japanese Maple and can be left out or planted out in full sun.
In my opinion, the Baldsmith is a must addition to any Japanese Garden, patio tree or courtyard tree, it is also very happy in a large container in its early years and I would look to plant it out once it reaches 7 years old.

All Japanese Maple varieties are different, but The Care and The Problems remain almost the same, there are a few exceptions.
Japanese Maples in General do not need too much care and attention, but in some instances like: if you are going to re-pot it or potting up as some call it, then there are rules to follow or they could die.
