Acer Palmatum Summer Gold

Adult Acer Palmatum Summer Gold is a tall stand up Japanese Maple Tree and is a fantastic choice for the small to large Japanese gardens, courtyards or patios. This specimen variety has distinctive bright yellow coloured leaves throughout the summer and brightens up any garden. Summer Gold can be placed in full sun without the scare of leaf burn, it is a very hardy Japanese Maple.

The Acer Palmatum Summer Gold is a relatively new cultivar, propagated to combat leaf burn amongst yellow leafed maples.

Acer Palmatum Summer Gold is a fast growing, stand-up Acer Tree which is part of the Sapindaceae family. more info which has been awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit.

The Japanese Maple is a tall tree with a shrub-like crown which gives it a dense foliage. The Summer Gold will reach a height of 4 meters, and a spread of 5 meters, ours is about 2 meters and it is about 10 years old. The Summer Gold will grow tall from young and once it reaches its optimum height it will start to spread out. It will take 20 years to reach its maturity and 10 years before it reaches its potential.

The Acer Palmatum Summer Gold has small-medium cut palmate leaves, each delicate leaf consists of 5 lobes which have fine jagged edges, leading to a crisp point.

It has a very short and thick trunk, 6 to 12 inches in height with a wide girth which supports good solid verticle branches. The Summer Gold's lower branches are semi-hardwood, olive green in colour at the base which become a two tone of green and blood red colour at mid level, and become a blood red colour leading to the leaves. A lovely transition of colour and as the branches get longer they make a transition from semi-hardwood to a more soft-wood. It is very branchy which gives it a very dense shrub-like appearance and a lovely domed crown.

In the spring the leaves emerge a deep dark green colour and soon make the transition to bright yellow, the autumn transition is slower, from the yellow colour to gold, to a bright orange, and finally to a bright red. The Summer Gold is absolutely stunning throughout the seasons.

The medium cut leaves are 4 to 5 cm in width and depth, its lengthy thin connecting shoots are a blood red colour, a contrast only seen up close.

The Summer Gold is a fast-growing Acer, if planted out, it can grow up to 30 cm a year, this is reduced by 30% when potted. The Summer Gold is very hardy Japanese Acer and can be left out or planted out in full sun.

The Summer Gold's habit makes it a fantastic addition to any Japanese Garden, patio tree or courtyard tree.
