Care Of The Acer Palmatum Trompenburg

Acer Palmatum Trompenburg is a Stand Up Red Acer Tree which is part of the Sapindaceae family. more info which has been awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Of Asian and Russian Origin it was introduced into Europe and the USA in the 1800's, one of the oldest cultivars to our shores unlike its siblings: The Green Trompenburg and Red Trompenburg which are relatively new cultivars.

The Japanese Maple is a stand up tall tree which will reach a height of 4 meters and a spread of 4 meters. The Trompenburg will grow tall from young and once it reaches its optimum height it will start to spread out. It will take 20 years to reach its maturity and 10 years before it reaches its potential.

The Acer Palmatum Trompenburg has large deeply cut pinnate leaves, its lobes are domed shaped which makes them rigid like a starfish.

It has distinctive snakeskin bark which is lime to olive green in colour with an abundance of fawn / white coloured lines and dashes growing vertically throughout the bark. The Trompenburg's branches are soft wood in their infancy and start a lime green colour, tapering into a blood red colour. Its leaves are supported by deep purple coloured softwood stems. The magnitude of colour and shapes makes the Trompenburg stand out amongst other acers.

The large pinnate leaves are deeply cut and each lobe can reach 15 cm in length. The dome shape makes them rigid and strong to the touch and keeps their shape. In the spring the leaves will emerge a deep purple colour, as summer approaches, green undertones start to appear and throughout the summer the olive green spreads and in some trees it can totally transform to an olive green tree.

In the early autumn, the leaves start to lose their dome shape and they become more of a flat leaf. The Olive green colour gradually gives way to a stunning yellow and fire engine red colour before it's final transition to a deep red colour.

The transitions of colour are what make Japanese Maples so popular.

The Trompenburg is similar to most Acers in that it is slow growing especially when potted, in its infant years it will grow higher than wider and can be a patio or courtyard tree but as it reaches its potential it will start to spread out and would prefer to planted out in the ground. The trompenburg is very hardly and can be left out or planted out in full sun.

The Trompenburg is different and would make a fantastic addition to any Japanese Garden, patio tree or courtyard tree.
